5th August 2024 – VAT Registration Changes Move Online Only
HMRC change their processes regularly and it is important to keep up to date with the digitalisation of certain tax services.
Making Tax Digital is an HMRC project aiming to digitise the UK’s tax system, improve efficiency, reduce tax fraud, and help taxpayers file accurate tax returns by maintaining digital records and using MTD-compatible software.
With that in mind, an important announcement for August 2024 relating to VAT registration processes was made last week.
HMRC sent out the following information on 11 July:
From 5 August 2024, any request to change your VAT registration details should be made using the VAT online account, and not by using the VAT484 form or any other postal or electronic means.
This means that the VAT484 form will no longer be available for use and all changes to VAT registration details must be made using online HMRC services. There are, however, exceptions to this.

Exceptions – VAT484 Form Requests
If a customer is digitally excluded or needs special assistance with digital services, HMRC have offered assurances that there will always be alternative arrangements made on their behalf.
In these instances, a special VAT484 form will have to be requested from HMRC directly.

The form can be requested via telephone or letter.
More information on what this entails for VAT returns will be made when the change goes into effect on 5th August 2024.
